We're a working class community. We're a brown and black majority community. We care for, organize, and aid mutually our oppressed peoples. We do land acknowledgements, immigration raid defenses, we know Black lives matter, and we care about the workers. So of course, the dictator Trump, who's targeting immigrants as his first claimed pariah of our society, will send in troops to galvanize the police force to side with his fascist tendencies, here in Los Angeles. He believes he can dominate us, and we'll cower to his fascist will, but he's wrong.

The people of Los Angeles know, probably more than any other community in USA that the administration, and everyone falling inline to them is on the wrong side of history. They know this is a fight; probably the biggest fight of their lives. They have signs from Mexico and Central and South America, because those are the nations they were born from, and they're connected to, while this nation, USA and the red, white and blue are the perpetrators of cruel wars, land and resource capture, and countless killings. California was once a part of Mexico. Mexico who's now the 10th largest economy, has an incredible leader. One who believes in democracy, respecting and supporting its workers, elderly, and youth. Mexico is lined up to be a major corridor with Asia for the advancement of trade, manufacturing and production of the future. Perhaps Los Angeles should rejoin Mexico, and take all of California with it. Moving the 4th largest economy to the 10th largest economy, that's on a major surge seems like a better use of all our efforts than staying and supporting this senile pedophile President in his march to re-establish the 4th-Reich.

All of the LAPD, LASD, National Guard, Marines, and Federal agents here in LA, we see you, and know which side you're on. You're the nazis of your generation, just following orders as you take your Israeli tactics and tools, and try to impose a Palestinian style occupation on Los Angeles. This will not be forgotten. If you're not part of the revolution, than you've chosen your side; from fear or from supremacy, or from comfort, you choose the nazi dictator and his cartel of sycophants and colonizers.

Keep up the good fight people of Los Angeles, we'll be struggling for our freedom, but we're on the right side of history.

Boyle Heights

In the heart of Boyle Heights, Los Angeles, a community is under siege. The adversary? Tiao Corporation, a developer with plans to erect a towering six-story market-rate housing complex at the intersection of Cesar Chavez Avenue and Chicago Street. While this might seem like just another development project on the surface, a deeper look reveals a disturbing pattern of displacement, gentrification, and inequality that has long plagued working-class communities like Boyle Heights.

In January 2023, Tiao Corporation unveiled its plans for this colossal structure, which, shockingly, will comprise only five affordable units out of a total of 50. For a community already grappling with historical marginalization, unemployment, and the devastating impacts of COVID-19, this development is nothing short of a slap in the face. It threatens the very livelihoods of current tenants, both commercial and residential, many of whom are multi-generational residents deeply rooted in the community.

Among those standing against this gentrification onslaught are a family that has owned a restaurant/bar, El Apetito, for the past 35 years, an 83-year-old tenant who has lived in the area for three decades, and various other long-standing businesses and cultural institutions like Finessa beauty salon and Re/arte Centro Literario. These are not just buildings and businesses; they are the lifeblood of Boyle Heights, embodying its rich cultural heritage and community spirit.

The Boyle Heights Neighborhood Council has already taken a stand against Tiao Corporation, voting unanimously against the development and drafting a letter of opposition citing concerns about gentrification and cultural erasure. The proposed development blatantly contradicts the community's Neighborhood Plan, which emphasizes the preservation of historic and cultural integrity, protection of legacy businesses, and provision of small commercial spaces for neighborhood-serving uses.

Adding fuel to the fire are serious environmental and infrastructure issues. Boyle Heights, including the proposed development site, has been historically contaminated by Exide, making an Environmental Impact Report (EIR) imperative for any new development. Moreover, the dense building plans could exacerbate existing sewage and traffic problems, further straining the community's already fragile infrastructure.

Will Tiao, the man behind Tiao Corporation, has a dubious track record as a negligent landlord who has failed to maintain his residential units in good condition. His treatment of tenants has been nothing short of harassment, with reports of major habitability issues going unaddressed. Furthermore, Tiao has been accused of engaging in fraudulent Ellis Act evictions to clear the way for his luxury development, a clear violation of tenant rights and a deceptive use of a law intended for different circumstances.

Perhaps most egregious is Tiao Corporation's role in the erasure of Boyle Heights' cultural heritage. Reports have surfaced of a cultural mural being whitewashed, an act tantamount to a hate crime in a community that takes immense pride in its Latinx immigrant roots. This deliberate erasure serves to silence and marginalize the very people who make Boyle Heights the vibrant community it is.

The community is not taking these injustices lying down. Viva Padilla, owner of Re/Arte, has filed an appeal on behalf of the tenants, and public hearings have been scheduled to give residents a platform to voice their opposition. The fight against Tiao Corporation's invasive development is far from over, and the community is rallying together to save their beloved Boyle Heights from becoming yet another casualty of unchecked gentrification and corporate greed.

The plight of Boyle Heights serves as a microcosm of broader issues plaguing American society: rampant gentrification, income inequality, and the prioritization of profit over people. Tiao Corporation's predatory development practices are symptomatic of a capitalist system that prioritizes the interests of corporations and the wealthy elite over the needs and well-being of working-class communities.

The skewed distribution of affordable housing in the proposed development—only five out of 50 units—are a glaring example of how market-driven approaches to housing perpetuate inequality and exacerbate housing crises. In a truly socialist society, housing would be a human right, not a commodity to be exploited for profit.

Furthermore, the environmental hazards and infrastructure strains associated with the development highlight the unsustainable nature of capitalist development models, which prioritize short-term profits over long-term community well-being and environmental sustainability.

The erasure of Boyle Heights' cultural heritage and the displacement of its long-standing residents are not just unfortunate side effects of gentrification; they are deliberate strategies employed to sanitize and commodify neighborhoods for the benefit of affluent newcomers at the expense of existing communities. This cultural erasure is a form of violence that perpetuates systemic racism and marginalization, serving to reinforce existing power structures and perpetuate social inequality.

The struggle against Tiao Corporation's gentrification project in Boyle Heights is not just a local issue; it is a battle for the soul of our society. It is a fight against the relentless march of capitalism that seeks to commodify and exploit every aspect of human life, from housing to culture to community. The residents of Boyle Heights are not just fighting for their homes; they are fighting for dignity, equality, and social justice. Their struggle is a testament to the resilience and strength of communities in the face of systemic oppression and serves as a rallying cry for all those committed to building a more just, equitable, and compassionate world.

Imperialist Policy and Democracy

In the complex tapestry of global politics, recent events have illuminated the enduring contradictions and tensions that underpin the US political landscape and its relations with territories like Puerto Rico and global issues like the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Kamala Harris's recent visit to Puerto Rico, ostensibly for a Democratic Party fundraiser, was met with widespread protests that underscored the deep-rooted grievances against the ongoing US occupation and the administration's complicity in global atrocities.

The Puerto Rican people, already burdened by the devastating aftermath of Hurricane Maria and years of harsh austerity measures imposed by the unelected Fiscal Control Board (FCB), viewed Harris's visit as a cynical attempt to exploit their plight for political gain. Organizations like Jornada Se Acabaron Las Promesas and Boricuas for Palestine led the protests, denouncing colonialism, imperialism, and the continued support for Israel's aggressive actions against the Palestinian people. The symbolism was potent: protesters replaced US and colonial Puerto Rican flags with Haitian, Palestinian, and Puerto Rican independence flags, signaling solidarity with other oppressed communities worldwide.

The PROMESA Act of 2016, signed into law under the Obama administration, further exacerbated Puerto Rico's economic woes by imposing stringent austerity measures that intensified poverty and public service cuts. Despite the island's dire conditions, Harris's visit was perceived as a mere photo-op, devoid of substantive policy proposals to alleviate the suffering of the Puerto Rican people. Yanina Arias, an activist with Jornada, captured the essence of this sentiment, stating, “Harris came to take thousands of dollars for [Biden’s] re-election campaign, while the people of Borikén live in extreme poverty."

Adding another layer of irony to Harris's visit was the fact that Puerto Ricans residing on the island are denied the right to vote in US presidential elections, despite being allowed to participate in the primaries. This glaring incongruity exposes the colonial nature of Puerto Rico's relationship with the US, reducing its inhabitants to mere political pawns devoid of genuine representation.

Parallel to these domestic tensions, the US and its European allies' unwavering support for Israel, despite widespread global condemnation of its actions in Gaza, highlights a broader crisis of leadership within the Global North. The recent tragic death of Aaron Bushnell, a young US Airforce soldier who took his own life in protest against the genocide of Palestinians, serves as a poignant reminder of the moral bankruptcy of the political establishments that continue to prioritize geopolitical interests over human lives.

Public sentiment in both the US and Europe overwhelmingly favors an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and supports the Palestinian right to return to their homes. Yet, political leaders in the Global North persistently ignore these sentiments, opting instead for ambiguous statements and half-hearted diplomatic gestures that serve to perpetuate the status quo.

Vijay Prashad, an Indian historian and journalist, succinctly captures this disconnect between political elites and ordinary citizens, stating, "Clarity is not to be sought in the White House, in No. 10 Downing Street, or in the Élysée Palace. It is found in the words of ordinary people in these countries who are heartsick regarding the violence."

In conclusion, the confluence of events surrounding Kamala Harris's visit to Puerto Rico and the ongoing crisis in Gaza exposes the inherent contradictions and failures of US and global North politics. The protests in Puerto Rico and the global outcry against Israeli aggression are manifestations of a growing grassroots movement demanding accountability, justice, and equality. As the political establishment continues to falter, it is increasingly evident that transformative change can only be achieved through collective action and a commitment to socialist principles that prioritize human dignity over geopolitical expediency.

2024 Elections Coming

In the looming specter of the 2024 US presidential elections, the political landscape appears entrenched in a perpetual cycle of discontent and disillusionment. At the forefront of this electoral showdown stand two familiar figures: incumbent President Biden and former President Trump. Yet, behind the veneer of democratic choice lies a labyrinth of unresolved tensions and contradictions that lay bare the underlying fissures within American politics and foreign policy.

Biden, despite securing the Democratic Party nomination, finds himself grappling with a steady erosion of support, particularly among progressive voters and the youth demographic. His steadfast backing of Israel amidst its actions in Gaza has ignited fury among those who view his stance as complicit in human rights violations. Furthermore, Biden's failure to deliver on progressive promises, epitomized by the collapse of his ambitious social spending package "Build Back Better," has exacerbated disillusionment among constituents disillusioned with the status quo.

On the other end of the political spectrum, Trump's tenure as president left a legacy tarnished by controversy and bellicose foreign policy decisions. His mishandling of the COVID-19 pandemic and his heavy-handed response to nationwide protests against police brutality in 2020 drew condemnation from across the political spectrum. Moreover, Trump's adherence to traditionally hawkish US foreign policy goals, exemplified by the assassination of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani and his unwavering support for Israel, underscored the continuity of American militarism under his leadership.

The recent Supreme Court ruling upholding Texas' draconian immigration law further underscores the nation's deep-seated immigration woes. The law, known as S.B. 4, grants state law enforcement unprecedented powers to arrest and deport non-citizens, effectively militarizing immigration enforcement within Texas borders. This flagrant violation of constitutional principles has sparked outrage among immigrant communities and human rights advocates, who denounce it as an assault on the dignity of migrants and a betrayal of America's professed values of liberty and justice for all.

Amidst the cacophony of electoral politics, a burgeoning movement for systemic change is gaining traction within the US. Karina Garcia, running for Vice President alongside Claudia De La Cruz, embodies this spirit of resistance and renewal, advocating for a radical overhaul of US foreign policy and a reorientation towards anti-imperialist and socialist principles. Her platform, which emphasizes demilitarizing the border, granting full rights to immigrants, and addressing the root causes of migration driven by US imperialism and neoliberal economic policies, resonates with a growing segment of the population disillusioned with the status quo.

As the US hurtles towards another pivotal election, it confronts a series of existential questions about its identity and future trajectory. The choice between Biden and Trump epitomizes the deep-seated divisions and ideological fault lines that define contemporary American politics. Yet, amidst the chaos and uncertainty, there exists a glimmer of hope for transformative change—a vision rooted in principles of justice, equality, and solidarity. By embracing a politics of resistance and solidarity, the US can chart a course towards a more just and equitable future for all its citizens and residents. Only through bold action and a commitment to progressive transformation can the US fulfill its promise of democracy and equality for all.

Meddling in Caracas

As Venezuela gears up for its upcoming presidential elections in July, the political landscape is fraught with tension and uncertainty. Historian and political analyst Steve Ellner delves into the intricacies of Venezuela's electoral race, shedding light on the political stakes and US meddling that characterize the lead-up to the elections.

The United States' interference in Venezuela's electoral process has been conspicuous, particularly regarding the candidacy of María Corina Machado. Machado, a staunch critic of President Maduro, has enjoyed support from the Biden administration, which has exerted pressure on Maduro's government regarding her eligibility to run for president. The threat of revoked sanctions loomed over Maduro if he did not lift a government ruling barring Machado from the race. Machado's candidacy, coupled with the ruling against her participation, has injected volatility into Venezuela's already tumultuous political landscape.

Machado's presidential bid represents a pivot towards right-wing neoliberalism, aligning herself with the US and advocating for radical economic reforms. However, her candidacy faces several challenges, including divisions within the opposition and widespread public distrust of politicians. While Machado's supporters are passionate, their numbers may not translate into electoral success, as her refusal to negotiate with the government and support for sanctions alienate many Venezuelan voters.

President Maduro has employed a multi-faceted strategy to maintain power, combining political maneuvering with economic reforms. Maduro's skillful navigation of Venezuela's political landscape has thwarted numerous attempts by the opposition to oust him from power. Moreover, his economic policies, which favor private sector involvement and seek to attract foreign investment, have garnered support from segments of the opposition and business community.

Despite Maduro's political acumen, his economic reforms have yielded mixed results. While inflation has been reduced, scarcities and long lines at supermarkets persist, highlighting ongoing economic challenges. Moreover, Maduro's anti-corruption campaign has led to high-profile arrests but also exposed institutional weaknesses within the government, contributing to public disillusionment.

US intervention in Venezuela has exacerbated political tensions and undermined democratic processes. Washington's support for right-wing elements within the opposition has alienated segments of Venezuelan society and hindered efforts to resolve the country's political crisis through peaceful means. The imposition of sanctions and the offer of bounties for Maduro's capture have further destabilized the situation, making fair and free elections increasingly unlikely.

As Venezuela braces for its upcoming presidential elections, the prospects for democratic resolution appear grim. The confluence of US meddling, internal divisions within the opposition, and economic challenges complicates efforts to achieve political stability and economic recovery. Without meaningful dialogue and a commitment to inclusive governance, Venezuela's political impasse is likely to persist, prolonging the suffering of its people and thwarting hopes for a peaceful resolution.

Culver City Money

In the serene realm of Culver City, nestled within the vibrant landscape of Los Angeles County, a storm is brewing. Behind the progressive facade of this idyllic community lies a battleground where big developers pull the strings of right-wing factions to subvert the will of the people. As locals celebrate hard-fought victories in the realm of progressive policy, the shadow of real estate interests looms large, funding a reactionary movement aimed at rolling back the gains of the working class and marginalized communities.

In recent years, Culver City has emerged as a beacon of progressive change, enacting policies ranging from permanent rent control to bold environmental initiatives like the closure of the Inglewood Oil Field. These victories, achieved through the tireless efforts of grassroots organizers and community advocates, have ushered in a new era of hope and possibility for residents. However, as progressive ideals gain momentum and public support, they have also attracted the ire of powerful interests seeking to preserve the status quo and safeguard their own profits at the expense of the common good.

At the heart of this reactionary movement are deep-pocketed developers like Hackman Capital Partners, whose insidious influence extends far beyond the confines of their corporate boardrooms. Through the creation of political action committees (PACs) and strategic campaign contributions, these real estate magnates wield immense power over local elections, effectively shaping the political landscape to serve their own narrow interests. The Alliance for Culver City, sponsored by The Culver Studios, stands as a prime example of this corrupting influence, injecting a staggering $225,000 into the 2022 Culver City Council race with the explicit goal of installing candidates sympathetic to their profit-driven agenda.

Protect Culver City, founded by landlord Ron Bassilian, epitomizes the unholy alliance between big developers and reactionary politics. This shadowy organization, along with its cohorts like Culver City Neighbors United and Common Sense Culver City, employs a range of deceptive tactics to sow discord and derail progressive initiatives. From astroturfing to fear-mongering, these groups stop at nothing to advance their regressive agenda and maintain the status quo of exploitation and inequality.

Candidates endorsed by these right-wing factions, such as Denice Renteria and Dan O’Brien, serve as willing puppets in the hands of their real estate overlords. Advocating for policies that prioritize corporate profits over the needs of the community, these candidates shamelessly align themselves with the interests of their wealthy donors, all while paying lip service to the ideals of democracy and public service. Their campaigns, generously funded by developers like Hackman Capital Partners, highlight the insidious influence of money in politics and the urgent need for campaign finance reform to curb the power of corporate interests.

Campaign finance data paints a damning picture of real estate's stranglehold on Culver City politics. Contributions from developers and associated entities constitute a significant portion of candidates' funding, raising serious concerns about the integrity of the electoral process and the influence of moneyed interests on public policy. From maxed-out donations to coordinated fundraising efforts, the web of corruption woven by big developers threatens to undermine the democratic principles upon which our society is founded.

Despite the formidable opposition posed by big developers and their political puppets, the spirit of progressive activism burns brightly in the hearts of Culver City residents. The victories achieved through grassroots organizing and community solidarity serve as a testament to the power of collective action in the face of entrenched power and privilege. As progressive policies implemented in Culver City inspire neighboring jurisdictions and catalyze broader societal change, the fight for equity, justice, and dignity for all remains as urgent and relevant as ever.

As the battle for Culver City's soul unfolds, residents must remain vigilant against the encroachment of big developers and their political proxies. By exposing the machinations of these puppeteers, mobilizing grassroots resistance, and amplifying the voices of the marginalized, Culver City can reclaim its progressive legacy and chart a path towards genuine equality and justice for all. In the face of adversity, the spirit of community and solidarity must prevail, lest Culver City succumb to the whims of its real estate overlords. It's time to stand up, speak out, and reclaim our city from the clutches of greed and exploitation.

Temecula's Kids and reactionaries

In the quiet suburban city of Temecula, California, a battle rages within its school district—a battle for free speech, equality, and the very soul of public education. At the heart of this struggle are students, teachers, parents, and community members who refuse to stay silent in the face of oppressive policies enacted by the far-right majority on the school board. This article explores the courageous resistance against these policies and frames it within the broader context of anti-imperialism, anti-US politics, and the quest for socialist transformation.

Since the election of three far-right members to the Temecula Valley Unified School District board, students like Brooklyn Anderson have witnessed a disturbing rise in racism, homophobia, and censorship within their schools. Anderson, a senior at Chaparral High School and president of the Black Student Union, has bravely spoken out against the board’s divisive policies, including the banning of Critical Race Theory (CRT) and LGBTQ+ flags on campus.

The actions of the school board, backed by conservative groups and figures like Christian nationalist pastor Tim Thompson, reflect a broader assault on public education and progressive values. By banning discussions on systemic racism and LGBTQ+ rights, the board aims to whitewash history and silence dissent, perpetuating a cycle of ignorance and oppression.

Despite facing intimidation and harassment, students, teachers, and community members have united under groups like One Temecula Valley PAC to demand accountability and push for a recall of the far-right board members. Their efforts symbolize a grassroots movement against the forces of imperialism, capitalism, and bigotry that seek to undermine democracy and equality.

The struggle in Temecula is not isolated but part of a global fight for social justice and liberation. As socialist activists, we stand in solidarity with those resisting oppression in Temecula and around the world. At the center of this controversy is LA City Attorney Hydee Feldstein Soto, whose actions have sparked outrage and condemnation from advocates of free speech and accountability.

The saga began when activists, in a bid to expose LAPD overreach and misconduct, compiled a database of LAPD officers—an act protected under the banner of free speech. Instead of addressing concerns raised by the public, Feldstein Soto chose to escalate tensions by filing lawsuits against journalists, including Knock LA's photo editor Ben Camacho. This move, ostensibly aimed at suppressing information, underscores a troubling trend of censorship and intimidation within the city's corridors of power.

Feldstein Soto's legal maneuvers represent a direct assault on the fundamental principles of press freedom and government accountability. By targeting journalists and activists who seek to hold law enforcement accountable, the city attorney's office is complicit in perpetuating a culture of secrecy and impunity. Such actions not only undermine public trust but also erode the foundations of a healthy democracy.

Moreover, Feldstein Soto's handling of corruption within City Hall raises serious concerns about her commitment to upholding the rule of law. In a city plagued by systemic corruption and political malfeasance, the role of the city attorney as a watchdog and guardian of public integrity is paramount. Yet, Feldstein Soto's reluctance to aggressively pursue allegations of corruption and abuse of power among elected officials is deeply troubling.

In contrast, civil rights attorney Faisal Gill has emerged as a principled advocate for transparency and accountability in city government. With a firm commitment to rooting out corruption and holding powerful insiders accountable, Gill represents a beacon of hope for Angelenos weary of entrenched political corruption. His unwavering stance against bigotry and malfeasance, coupled with a pledge to prioritize anti-corruption efforts, resonates deeply with voters seeking real change in City Hall.

As Los Angeles prepares for a pivotal election, the choice between Feldstein Soto and Gill is clear. While one candidate embodies the status quo—a culture of complacency and complicity—the other offers a vision of bold, transformative leadership. In the face of mounting challenges, from police misconduct to political corruption, Angelenos must rally behind candidates who are unafraid to challenge entrenched power structures and fight for the common good.

The lawsuits filed by LA City Attorney Hydee Feldstein Soto against journalists and activists represent a grave threat to press freedom and government accountability. At this critical juncture, it is imperative that Angelenos stand united in defense of democratic values and demand leadership that is committed to upholding the public trust. Only by holding our elected officials accountable can we ensure a brighter, more equitable future for all residents of Los Angeles.

LA Elections Update

In the heart of Los Angeles County, a pivotal showdown is brewing as a diverse array of candidates vies for the role of district attorney. At the center of the contest is the incumbent, George Gascón, whose tenure has come under intense scrutiny amidst rising discontent. With the primary elections looming, the race has captured widespread attention, offering a glimpse into the shifting dynamics of law enforcement and criminal justice reform.

Gascón's bid for reelection is mired in controversy, with dismal approval ratings reflecting widespread dissatisfaction among voters. Despite facing a staggering 51% disapproval rate, the embattled incumbent retains a loyal base of support, buoyed by his status as the sitting district attorney. However, with a crowded field of challengers, including four formidable contenders, Gascón's path to victory remains uncertain.

Among the contenders, Jonathan Hatami emerges as a vocal critic of Gascón's policies, advocating for the reinstatement of sentencing enhancements and a tougher stance on crime. His appeal to conservative voters and proponents of law and order has garnered significant traction, positioning him as a formidable opponent in the race. Yet, his prospects of securing victory in a liberal stronghold like Los Angeles County appear challenging, given the prevailing sentiment favoring criminal justice reform.

Eric Siddall, another deputy district attorney, echoes Hatami's criticisms of Gascón but lacks a coherent message to rally voters behind his candidacy. While emphasizing his commitment to combatting crime, Siddall's campaign has failed to gain significant momentum, relegating him to the periphery of the electoral fray.

Nathan Hochman, a former federal prosecutor, presents himself as an independent voice seeking to roll back Gascón's progressive agenda. However, his campaign rhetoric portraying Los Angeles as "dystopian" has failed to resonate with voters, undermining his prospects of emerging victorious in the primary race.

In contrast, Jeff Chemerinsky, a former federal prosecutor, offers a compelling blend of tough law enforcement and thoughtful reform initiatives. Advocating for a nuanced approach to criminal justice, Chemerinsky has garnered support from a diverse coalition, including police reform advocates and civil rights activists. His emphasis on balancing public safety with progressive reform resonates with voters disillusioned with Gascón's leadership, positioning him as a formidable challenger in the race.

At the heart of the electoral contest lies a fundamental question about the state of public safety in Los Angeles. While some candidates advocate for a return to punitive measures, others champion a holistic approach centered on addressing root causes of crime, such as homelessness and addiction. As voters weigh their options, the outcome of the primary elections will shape the trajectory of criminal justice reform in Los Angeles County.

Ultimately, the race for district attorney represents a pivotal moment in the quest for justice and equality. By challenging the status quo and advocating for meaningful reform, candidates offer a vision of a more just and equitable future for all residents of Los Angeles. As the electorate prepares to cast their votes, they must consider the values and principles that will guide the county's approach to law enforcement and criminal justice for years to come.

The US at the Border

In a disconcerting turn of events, the Biden administration has shown signs of veering away from its campaign promises of a compassionate and humane immigration policy. Recent deliberations within the administration suggest a potential executive action that could restrict asylum claims for individuals crossing the US border unlawfully, mirroring the contentious measures attempted by former President Donald Trump. This apparent pivot towards conservative immigration policies marks a departure from Biden's earlier rhetoric and raises concerns about the erosion of civil liberties and human rights.

The proposed executive action, reminiscent of Trump's controversial efforts to target asylum seekers in 2018, threatens to undermine the fundamental right to seek asylum and protection from persecution. By denying individuals the opportunity to present their asylum claims upon reaching US soil, the Biden administration risks perpetuating a cycle of injustice and exclusion. Moreover, such a policy shift contradicts Biden's pledges to dismantle Trump's harsh immigration enforcement measures and uphold America's legacy as a nation of immigrants.

Amidst these developments, the resurgence of Trumpism poses a grave threat to progressive values and democratic norms in the United States. With Trump gaining momentum in the Republican presidential primaries and emerging as the frontrunner for the party's nomination, there is growing apprehension about the potential resurgence of his divisive and authoritarian leadership. Trump's brand of politics, characterized by xenophobia, nationalism, and authoritarianism, threatens to unravel the fabric of American democracy and exacerbate social divisions.

Trump's proposed platform of "retribution" exemplifies his authoritarian tendencies and disregard for democratic principles. His plans to expand presidential authority, purge federal agencies of perceived adversaries, and curtail media freedoms signal a dangerous erosion of checks and balances. Moreover, Trump's advocacy for deploying the military against domestic protests and migrant populations underscores his willingness to trample on civil liberties in pursuit of political power.

On the issue of immigration, Trump's agenda is marked by cruelty and exclusion. From his inflammatory rhetoric demonizing immigrants to his draconian policies separating families and militarizing the border, Trump's approach to immigration enforcement is antithetical to America's values of inclusivity and diversity. By scapegoating vulnerable populations and stoking nativist sentiments, Trump seeks to appeal to his base at the expense of marginalized communities.

In contrast, a progressive alternative offers a vision of compassion, solidarity, and justice. By advocating for comprehensive immigration reform, inclusive policies, and respect for human rights, progressives seek to build a more equitable and welcoming society. This includes providing pathways to citizenship for undocumented immigrants, protecting the rights of asylum seekers, and addressing the root causes of migration through diplomacy and development assistance.

The convergence of Biden's immigration policy shift and the resurgence of Trumpism underscores the urgent need for a renewed commitment to progressive values and democratic principles. As the nation grapples with competing visions of its future, it is essential to resist the forces of authoritarianism and division and uphold the ideals of equality, justice, and inclusivity for all. By standing in solidarity with marginalized communities and advocating for policies that prioritize human dignity and rights, we can build a brighter and more equitable future for generations to come.

Sacrifice

In a bold and shocking act of protest, Aaron Bushnell, a 25-year-old active duty member of the US Air Force, set himself on fire outside the Israeli embassy in Washington DC. His self-immolation was a powerful statement against Israel's genocide in Gaza and the United States' complicity in supporting this violence. Bushnell's sacrifice has ignited discussions about US imperialism, solidarity with Palestine, and the urgent need for socialist transformation.

Bushnell's act of protest comes amid ongoing Israeli attacks on Gaza, which have killed thousands of Palestinians and displaced over two million. The US government has not only failed to condemn these atrocities but has actively supported Israel by supplying billions of dollars in arms and ammunition. The Israeli embassy in Washington has become a focal point for protests against this complicity, with activists demanding an immediate ceasefire and an end to US aid to Israel.

In a livestreamed video, Bushnell poured liquid on himself, shouted "Free Palestine," and set himself on fire. His act of protest challenges the dominant narrative that justifies US support for Israel's actions and underscores the need for radical change.

As a US military member, Bushnell's protest raises important questions about soldiers' complicity in imperialist wars and occupations. His sacrifice forces us to confront the moral dilemmas faced by those serving in the military and the broader implications of US militarism. The friend described Bushnell as visibly distressed and fearful, marking a stark departure from his usual demeanor. However, the veracity of Bushnell's claims remains unverified, and the White House has adamantly denied any US troops being deployed on the ground in Gaza. Despite this, Bushnell's alleged actions have sparked speculation about the implications of his revelations and the broader context of US foreign policy. His tragic act of protest has raised questions about the ethical and moral dilemmas faced by individuals within the military establishment, prompting reflection on the consequences of US military interventions abroad.

Hunger in Gaza

The dire humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza demands urgent attention and action from the international community. A recent report by the World Food Programme (WFP) has shed light on the alarming rise in malnutrition among children in the region, with over 15% of children under the age of 2 in northern Gaza suffering from acute malnutrition.

The situation has been exacerbated by the ongoing Israeli attacks on Gaza, which have devastated the region's infrastructure and hindered the delivery of essential aid. Without a ceasefire, the WFP warns that a famine could ravage Gaza by May, further exacerbating the suffering of its already vulnerable population.

The consequences of malnutrition extend far beyond physical health, creating the perfect conditions for the spread of communicable diseases. With limited access to clean water and nutritious food, children in Gaza are at heightened risk of contracting preventable illnesses, further compounding the humanitarian crisis.

Moreover, the targeting of hospitals and medical facilities by Israeli forces has severely undermined Gaza's already fragile healthcare system. Attacks on hospitals, including the recent targeting of a building housing Doctors Without Borders (MSF) staff, have resulted in loss of life and prevented access to critical medical care for those in need.

The besiegement of hospitals and the obstruction of humanitarian aid efforts by Israeli forces represent flagrant violations of international law and humanitarian principles. The deliberate targeting of healthcare workers and facilities constitutes a grave breach of human rights and must be condemned in the strongest terms.

The international community must take immediate action to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and hold those responsible for human rights abuses and violations of international law accountable. This includes pressuring the Israeli government to end its attacks on Gaza, lift the blockade, and allow unhindered access for humanitarian aid organizations.

Furthermore, efforts must be made to address the root causes of the crisis, including the ongoing occupation and siege of Gaza, which have perpetuated cycles of poverty, violence, and instability in the region. A comprehensive and sustainable solution to the crisis in Gaza requires a commitment to justice, equality, and the rights of all Palestinians to live in dignity and freedom.

The humanitarian crisis in Gaza is a stark reminder of the urgent need for solidarity, compassion, and action in support of the Palestinian people. It is incumbent upon the international community to stand in solidarity with Gaza and work towards a just and lasting peace in the region. Only through collective action and a commitment to human rights and justice can we hope to end the suffering of the people of Gaza and achieve a brighter future for all Palestinians.

Latinos of LA, a Political Power

Los Angeles, once dubbed the "wicked city" for its anti-labor stance, has undergone a remarkable transformation into a progressive stronghold over the last decade. At the heart of this shift lies a triad of influential factors: the rise of a progressive labor movement, the emergence of community-based organizing with a keen understanding of power dynamics, and, notably, the amplification of immigrant voices. This metamorphosis, however, is not without its challenges, framing a nuanced polarization issue pitting the progressive forces against a rising tide of nativism, sometimes veering toward fascism.

The watershed moment for this transformation was the "Los Angeles Riots" in 1992, which not only exposed the deep-seated issues of police-community relations but also highlighted the economic disparities in the city. The subsequent response was the birth of progressive movements, notably the Los Angeles Alliance for a New Economy (LAANE), focusing on working poverty and broader economic opportunity.

A significant driving force behind this change was the rapid "Latinization" of South Central, a result of increased immigration. Immigrants, particularly Latinos, expanded the base for left-leaning politics. Through the 1980s and 1990s, immigrants, often undocumented, became instrumental in labor organizing, staging strikes, and contributing to the rise in private-sector unionization—a stark contrast to the national trend.

While immigrants were initially a complementary force to labor and community-based organizing, they quickly evolved into pivotal players with their organizations and political agendas. The immigrant surge in activism was catalyzed by events like the 1994 Proposition 187, a measure attempting to restrict public services for undocumented immigrants. This, in turn, sparked the autonomy of the immigrant-rights movement.

However, tensions arose within the Latino community itself, as the flashpoint emerged regarding the display of Mexican flags during protests against Proposition 187. The immigrant organizers sought independent political action, highlighting a broader debate on control over the strategy to defend immigrant rights.

The 1990s saw a shift in Latino political dynamics, with the rising share of immigrants propelling Latino politicians to power. Yet, this was not a passive assimilation into ethnic politics. Immigrants, including those unable to vote, became integral to electoral campaigns, challenging traditional notions of ethnic politics.

Immigrant rights organizations, such as the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles (CHIRLA) and the National Day Laborer Organizing Network (NDLON), played a crucial role in reshaping the stance of organized labor. This collaborative effort culminated in the AFL-CIO adopting a platform supportive of immigrant rights and comprehensive immigration reform in 1999.

A pivotal moment in this narrative was the May 1, 2006, march against the Sensenbrenner-King bill in Congress, which proposed draconian measures against undocumented immigrants. This event, where half a million people flooded the streets of Los Angeles, marked a turning point. Unlike 1994, marchers waved American flags, emphasizing a call for citizenship and voting. This moment spurred a surge in naturalizations, altering the political landscape.

Los Angeles in 2023 is a progressive haven where immigrant voices are integral to policy changes. Mayor Eric Garcetti has capitalized on this momentum, advocating for a significant increase in the city's minimum wage. Immigrant lobbying has extended beyond immigration issues to encompass land-use planning, education, job training, and environmental justice.

However, challenges persist. Notable is the dichotomy between the city and county, with differing policies on immigrant detainees. Yet, the overall shift is significant, offering hope for a more inclusive future.

While Los Angeles has made strides, it falls short in some areas compared to other cities. Yet, the city's pro-immigrant stance remains a remarkable change from the past. However, this progress is not guaranteed, requiring continuous efforts to foster a welcoming atmosphere for immigrants.

As the immigrant demographic continues to grow, the question of progressive identification is paramount. Immigrants must see progressive politicians as allies, and these political actors must align with immigrant concerns. Delaying issues like immigration reform risks altering the future political alignment, making immigrant voices even more pivotal.

In the landscape of shifting tides, Los Angeles stands as a testament to the potential fusion of immigrant activism and progressive politics. The city's journey illustrates that immigrants are not just subjects but actors in the political narrative. The future requires a commitment to nurturing progressive identification among immigrants, forming coalitions, and proactively addressing the broader socio-economic issues that bind us all.

This journey is not exclusive to Los Angeles. The tale of immigrant activism and its alignment with progressive forces serves as a blueprint for other cities in the United States. The task at hand is not just to build a city but to craft a nation that is more inclusive, equitable, and just.

Texas Secession Begins

In the ongoing battle over border control, the United States finds itself at a critical juncture, torn between conflicting ideologies that are shaping the nation's response to immigration. A coalition of 24 Republican governors, led by Texas Governor Greg Abbott, is at the forefront of what they claim is a defense of Texas' "constitutional right to self-defense." On the other side, the Biden administration and its supporters are grappling with this assertion, depicting it as a challenge to federal authority and a blatant disregard for humane immigration policies.

The Biden administration faces a significant challenge in managing the escalating crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border. The clash between Texas and federal authorities over the deployment of razor wire and floating buoys epitomizes the struggle between state and federal powers. Abbott justifies these measures by accusing President Biden of failing to enforce existing immigration laws, arguing that he is constitutionally obliged to take action.

The recent statement from 25 Republican governors underscores the polarization, with almost unanimous support for Abbott's actions. They argue that the federal government, under Biden's leadership, has neglected its "constitutional compact duties to the states," leaving Texas with legal justification to protect its sovereignty.

Former President Donald Trump has thrown his weight behind Abbott, commending Texas for resisting federal intervention at the border. Trump, in a rally in Las Vegas, praised Abbott for preventing the removal of razor wire, framing it as a commendable defense against what he termed a "horrible invasion."

Trump's rhetoric echoes the sentiments of the Republican governors, emphasizing the narrative that border states, particularly Texas, are under siege. His assertion that, as president, he would send reinforcements rather than restraining orders to Texas further exemplifies the fascist undertones of this stance.

Amidst this political maelstrom, the immigrants caught in the crossfire bear the brunt of these policies. The focus on deterrent measures like razor wire and buoy barriers dehumanizes the individuals seeking refuge and portrays them as threats rather than vulnerable humans.

A socialist critique of these policies is imperative, emphasizing the need for a humanitarian approach to immigration. Instead of viewing migrants as invaders, a socialist perspective calls for addressing the root causes of migration, advocating for comprehensive immigration reform, and fostering an environment of equality and justice.

The support for Texas from a majority of Republican governors, Trump's endorsement, and Abbott's defiance create a complex web of polarization. However, the path forward requires a nuanced approach. Rather than deepening divisions, the nation must seek resolutions that prioritize the well-being of immigrants, adhere to federal mandates, and address the concerns of states like Texas.

The polarization around the border issue should serve as a clarion call for a broader conversation on immigration reform. It's an opportunity for the Biden administration and state leaders to find common ground, address the root causes of migration, and work towards a comprehensive solution that aligns with the values of equality, justice, and humanity. As the nation grapples with this crisis, the hope is that pragmatic dialogue will prevail over divisive rhetoric, leading to a more compassionate and effective immigration policy.

Texas' Fascist Policy on the Border

In the heart of Texas, Governor Greg Abbott proudly announces the continuation of Operation Lone Star, a multi-agency effort purportedly designed to secure the border and combat transnational criminal activities. However, beneath the veneer of border security lies a political narrative that warrants a critical examination, challenging the anti-immigrant stance and advocating for progressive transformation grounded in socialist values.

Abbott's press release lauds Operation Lone Star for its substantial impact, citing over 496,700 illegal immigrant apprehensions and more than 38,700 criminal arrests. However, beyond the numerical façade, a deeper narrative emerges – one that paints immigrants as threats rather than fellow humans seeking refuge. This perspective aligns with the broader anti-immigrant sentiment proliferated by the conservative administration.

The transportation figures presented in the release raise ethical questions about the treatment of migrants. While framed as a strategic move, it hints at an unsettling reality – migrants being treated as pawns in a political chess game. The journey of over 12,500 migrants to Washington, D.C., and other cities serves as a stark reminder of the dehumanization embedded in immigration policies.

Abbott's invocation of Texas' constitutional right to self-defense, as outlined in his statement, masks a more insidious agenda. By declaring an "invasion" under Article I, § 10, Clause 3, Abbott attempts to legitimize anti-immigrant policies, tapping into a narrative that frames migrants as enemies rather than vulnerable individuals fleeing hardship.

His emphasis on the executive branch's duty to enforce federal laws conveniently sidesteps the need for humane immigration reform. Abbott's narrative, echoing anti-immigrant sentiments, fails to address the root causes of migration and instead perpetuates an "us versus them" mentality.

The recent highlights from Operation Lone Star, including high-speed pursuits and arrests, offer a glimpse into the harsh realities faced by immigrants. The portrayal of an 18-year-old as a "smuggler" serves to criminalize individuals rather than understanding the systemic issues driving migration.

Arresting a smuggling guide wanted for murder underscores the complexity of migration. Rather than focusing on punitive measures, a socialist critique would call for addressing the socio-economic disparities that contribute to such activities.

Operation Lone Star, when viewed through a socialist lens, reveals the deep-seated inequalities and dehumanization perpetuated by anti-immigrant agendas. Advocating for progressive transformation necessitates a shift from punitive measures to addressing the root causes of migration, embracing equality, and fostering an environment that respects the dignity of every individual, regardless of their place of origin. It is only through such a paradigm shift that true transformation, grounded in socialist values, can be achieved.
